Zahir Baybars was a powerful Mamluk Sultan who ruled Egypt and Syria for several decades. His full name was Rukn al-Din Baybars al-Bunduqdar. He built many monuments around the world in Egypt, Jerusalem, and Syria. His symbol was the lion, usually depicted with one foot up in a walking position. We wanted to catch a glimpse of his historical time period with these one of a kind bookends featuring the niche in his burial tomb in Damascus. We used vintage steel lions from the 1950's to echo Baybar's insignia. By combining an architectural from his burial tomb, his insignia, and his memory, we have made these bookends to truly bring some medieval Mamluk history into your workspace, office, or home. They would even go well in a nursery if you want to cater your little one to some historical sense from a young age. We absolutely love how these turned out. Material: Basswood; steel; Dimensions: 6 x 8" (base) 9" (inner height); Stain: Moonglow purple (custom stain by The Arabesque)
