#Lovewins and #Lovetrumpshate - We are proud to add these one of a kind handmade bookends to our store which were designed, woodburned, and painted by The Arabesque. These bookends were inspired by the epic mosaic panel depicting a lion and gazelles from the 8th century palace of Khirbat al-Majfar, an Umayyad palace near Jericho. In the original mosaic three gazelles are seen grazing under a tree when they are hunted and overpowered by a lion - an allegory to the lover's quest to win the favor of the beloved - since the gazelle represents beauty in Classical Arabic prose and poetry. We recreated the story as part of our #breakfree collection using woodburning, water colors, oil paint, and vintage woodcarved gazelle figurines. In our version - which is part of our #breakfree collection, there is no lion eating these gazelles - they are empowered as they dominate this reimagined epic scene. The base of these bookends is 6 x 8 x 1 inches. The side of the bookends measures 6 x 9 x 1 inches. |
