Our little workshop in Juarez has gotten orders for this Day of the Dead prayer flag from all over the world, so uniquely Mexican, and yet resonating deeply with people everywhere. The symbols and traditional rhymes (rimas) of Dia de los Muertos express the fragile nature of humanity, the light heartedness of the Mexican people, and the eternity of life itself. This prayer flag contains the rhymes: "Solo los muertos no tienen problemas." (only the dead have no problems) "Los muertos al cajon y los vivos al fieston." (the dead to the coffin, the living to the celebration) "El muerto al pozo y el vivo el gozo." (the dead to the well, the living to the bliss) "La que mata no es la muerte; si no la mala suerte." (it's not death that catches up with us, but bad luck) The images on this prayer flag are block-printed and stamped by hand on each bright panel. These prayer flags are made in a small shop in Juarez, Mexico, a city ravaged by poverty and violent crime. The women in our shop take tremendous pride in producing the best quality prayer flags available at a modest price. They are made of a durable weight cotton poplin so they will not 'scrunch up' or tear in the wind. They are hand dyed with permanent, non-toxic, Fiber Reactive Procion dyes and they last many months outside in wind and rain before fading very gradually. Our workshop is part of a community development project run by the Sisters of Charity (proyectosantonino.org), who have a community center for families with special needs children. This project supports several of these families and ALL of our proceeds go directly to the people making the prayer flags. Each strand of prayer flags consists of nine panels, each 6"-5", and the strand is approximately 54" long.
