Hobrecht credits "Tree" for his fame and success as a painter. Early in his career, Hobrecht started as a cartoonist for Surfer Magazine. However, when he did a painting of a famous site named Kirra, the well respected Surfers Journal offered him a two page spread in their magazine featuring surf art. Shortly after that, a woman called to purchase the painting, something that had previously been foreign to Hobrecht. He sold his piece, and began painting more after that which he calls his "big break." Hobrecht says if it wasn't for that painting, the others would most likely not have followed.
New York Welcome is a humorous depiction of an incident where a Redsox fan decided to wear his jersey into the "bleacher creatures" section at a Yankee game. The Redsox fan is seen being yelled at by the Yankees, whose motion is excellently captured by Hobrecht.
