Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. This scallop seashell is a common member of the Pectinidae family of mollusks. Like their cousins the oyster, scallops are highly prized as a gourmet food. There are several hundred varieties worldwide,a few hundred in the Chinese seas alone. In ancient China, seashells coins played an important role in burial rituals. The coin called the cowry was created in the shape of a seashell. When a Chinese Emperor was buried in those early times, his mouth was stuffed with nine cowries. Feudal lords were buried with seven cowries, high officers five, and ordinary officers three. Common people generally had their mouths stuffed only with rice. But if a commoner had some wealth, the last molar of each side of his mouth was supported by a small seashell. This was to ensure that the dead had plenty to eat and spend in the afterlife. In Imperial China, seashells were emblems on formal robes,an insignia of royalty. In Feng Shui, seashells are a charm for luck when travelling and with long distance relationships. When used in home design, seashells provide a protective shield and reduce stress. And,with all symbols that are water-based,seashells promote communication, healthy relationships and prosperity.
