In Chinese culture, dragons are an extremely important symbol, represented extensively in art, poetry and literature. Symbolically, the dragon represents the emperor's role in mediating between heaven and earth.
From the first century B.C., embroidered dragons were popular symbols on the luxurious robes of the emperors and high-ranking members of his court. The emperor, his sons and specially designated high-ranking courtiers were the only people allowed to wear emblems with five-clawed dragons; it was a crime for anyone else to wear those specific dragon designs.
This Dragon Robe came from the last Chinese dynasty, the Chin Dynasty. The style of this garment has the name Dragon Robe, but not all Dragon Robes have a dragon design.

In Feng Shui, water symbolizes ease, the freedom to swim anywhere smoothly and effortlessly. In combination with other objects, water means that the other benefit should come easily, without delay or obstacle.
Although this scene is from New England, lighthouses are ubiquitous on Chinese coasts, the oldest date from the 8th century.
There is a fascinating mystery about the 1st lighthouse in North America. There is an old stone tower in Rhode Island that was built in the 15th century. Historians and archeologists have no explanation for its existence. The timing does not match known visits from Europeans. Nobody knows for sure who built it and why.
One theory is that the famed "Treasure Voyages" of the Ming Dynasty actually had more ships and reached farther than originally thought. The theory is that Chinese sailors and their concubines were shipwrecked in Rhode Island and built a settlement and a lighthouse to attract rescuers and take astronomical, lunar and celestial readings. There is mounting scientific evidence that this may indeed have been what happened.

Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. This landscape was inspired by a painting by Tang Bohu, born in Suzhou, China. He lived in the 15th/16th centuries and was a scholar, painter, poet and calligrapher. He is one of the most famous artists in Chinese history. Tang Bohu became a legendary figure, immortalized in Chinese folklore as a romantic scamp and mischievous rascal, called the "Flirting Scholar". A famous Tang Bohu story is about his romance with Qiu Xiang. Tang Bohu was travelling, and saw a procession walking behind a sedan chair. There was a beautiful girl in the procession and he fell in love at first sight. Tang Bohu followed them and found the girl was a favorite slave of the Prime Minister's wife. To woo Qiu Xiang, he wore a disguise and asked the Prime Minister for a job. He charmed his way into a job as a tutor for the Prime Minister's sons. Everyone else loved him, but Tang Bohu annoyed Qiu Xiang. Frustrated, Tang Bohu told the Prime Minister he was leaving for a job that included a wife. Upset, the Prime Minister offered Tang Bohu a big raise and the pick of his wife's slaves to stay. There would be a line up of girls in the main hall the next day. Tang Bohu happily accepted the offer he had engineered. Qiu Xiang outsmarted him, talking the wife into letting her skip the line up. Tang Bohu complained to the Prime Minister when he couldn't find Qiu Xiang. In the end, Qiu Xiang and Tang Bohu were married. On their wedding night, Tang Bohu confessed his true identity and when Qiu Xiang learned everything he had done to win her heart, she melted. The fact that she had married a wealthy celebrity, not a poor scholar, was a nice bonus.

In Asian art, cherry blossoms are symbolic harbingers of spring and are considered welcoming. Cherry blossoms are native to the Himalayan area; Japan, China, and Korea, even northern India.
Cherry trees bloom in very early spring, when it is still very cold. Tiny flowers appear without leaves, which arrive later in the year. This unique showing is seen as brave and inspiring hope. The blossoms are a symbol of the strength that comes from surviving a harsh winter, and the good fortune that comes with strength of character.
Today, in China, cherry blossoms are the one of the most popular flowers for home decor. Often, cherry blossom images are displayed in the entrance way or living room for a big welcome to guests. In Feng Shui, cherry blossoms are also recommended in areas for contemplation, like a bedroom, office or study.
