King Silk Art makes silk embroidery wall art,100% hand-stitched by Master Artists in Suzhou,China. Our artwork,Susho,is completely natural, created with tiny needles and pure silk thread. Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. Our Susho was inspired by Mount Fuji Seen in Ocean by Katsushika Hokusai,a Japanese artist during the 18th/19th centuries, toward the end of the Edo Period. Hokusai is world-famous for woodblock prints celebrating Mount Fuji. Even his famous oceanscapes refer to Mount Fuji, whether literally in the image,or figuratively, like this one comparing a tsunami-like wave to Mount Fuji. The style of Japanese woodblock art, developed from the woodblock books printed in China, was first seen in Japan in the 8th century as Buddhist scroll illustrations. Woodblock printing became a popular alternative to handwriting books. And,by the century before Hokusai lived, artists were using woodblock print for economy and popularity. Hokusai's genius help popularize Japanese woodblock artwork all over the world. Vincent van Gogh was greatly influenced this style of artwork. Water is one of the Five Elements of nature, representing control. In Feng Shui, literally Wind-Water,water retains the wild wind. Ocean waves represent one of the strongest forces on earth, images of waves help fight the bad forces that challenge us. Ocean waves express the vast, dangerous and magnificent character of the sea, juxtaposed with the calm side of the sea, smooth under the warm sun. A watery example of perfect Yin Yang, ultimate natural balance.

Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. Our home,Suzhou,is the most famous of China's ¡°Water Towns¡±. Suzhou is about 60 miles west of Shanghai,in the lower delta of the Yangtze River and on the shores of Taihu Lake. Suzhou has a network of canals that function as streets. Marco Polo called Suzhou ¡°The Venice of the East¡±. The water-filled fishing village founded in the 6th century BC,is now the ninth largest city in China. The ancient houses in Suzhou's ¡°Old Town¡± district are quite singular. Whitewashed walls, grey tile roofs, brown timbers and a small pier make a rather elegant display. The canals are the streets, boats are the cars and the piers serve as kitchen annex, laundry and shopping center, vendors travel from house to house every day. In Chinese artwork, you will often see various combinations of canals, bridges and houses, which is a traditional way to represent Suzhou. The exact translations for this style are ¡°Bridge-Water-People¡±. This particular image is a reproduction of an ancient work, stylized in the artistic fashion of the ancient time.

There is a famous Chinese legend about true love and butterflies. A beautiful and intelligent girl named Zhu came from a wealthy family. Girls were not allowed to go to school, but Zhu talked her father into letting her attend classes disguised as a boy.
As a boy, Zhu became best friends with Liang. Liang did not know Zhu was a girl and couldn't guess Zhu was in love with him. One day Zhu's father told her no more school, no more pretending to be a boy, he found a wealthy husband for her and she had to get married.
Liang discovered Zhu was a girl, and realized he loved her too. But, Zhu's father would not let her marry a poor student. Liang died of a broken heart. When Zhu's wedding procession passed Liang's grave, a clap of thunder opened up the grave. Zhu threw herself into the grave to be with Liang. Zhu and Liang turned into beautiful butterflies and flew off, together forever. So, symbolically in Chinese culture, butterflies represent the purity of love, especially young love.
In our home in southeast China, it is a tradition for girls to celebrate the spring goddess in late spring. When the time is right, girls pick special flowers, play with butterflies and make willow crowns for the celebration. Butterflies are signs that the best of the season has arrived.
Butterflies with flowers symbolize sweet, innocent love and an early, but perfect marriage. Butterflies also represent freedom, specifically, the freedom to choose. To fly free from human longings and desires and soar joyfully into the heavens.

Over the centuries, our canal-filled water village developed into a beautiful city and attracted a large population of aristocrats, scholars and artists. Suzhou was called the Venice of the East by Marco Polo. During Imperial China, Suzhou's wealthiest residents build a series of private gardens that are unbelievably old and beautiful, 69 survived the centuries and today are popular tourist attractions.
These elaborate gardens are enormously popular in China and are a major status symbol. Suzhou's ancient gardens have been restored and are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Wonderful replicas of Suzhou's famous gardens can be found in the West. Portland, Oregon is Suzhou's Sister City and built Lan Su Chinese Garden, to delight locals and tourist. The Astor Court, located in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, is a re-creation of a Suzhou-style, Chinese-garden courtyard. And, Sydney, Australia's Darling Harbour's Chinese Garden of Friendship is another fantastic homage.
The scene in this artwork is from The Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou, China, built in the 12th century. Over the centuries, the garden changed hands many times and was even split into three separate gardens. In 1949, the government rejoined the gardens and then restored the garden to its original glory. The Humble Administrator's Garden is now a major landmark in Suzhou.
In Feng Shui, well designed garden images attract positive Chi using a dynamic harmony of colors, textures and the specific benefits of each individual element.

Cherry blossoms are native to the Himalayan area; Japan, China, and Korea, even northern India. Cherry trees bloom in very early spring, when it is still very cold. Tiny flowers appear without leaves, which arrive later in the year. This unique showing is seen as brave and inspiring hope. The blossoms are a symbol of the strength that comes from surviving a harsh winter, and the good fortune that comes with strength of character. Today, in China, cherry blossoms are the one of the most popular flowers for home decor. Often, cherry blossom images are displayed in the entrance way or living room for a big welcome to guests. In Feng Shui, cherry blossoms are also recommended in areas for contemplation, like a bedroom, office or study.

King Silk Art makes silk embroidery wall art, 100% hand-stitched by Master Artists in Suzhou, China. Our artwork, Susho, is completely natural, created with tiny needles and pure silk thread. Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. In Chinese culture, the color red is very important. Red roses are a traditional birthday or graduation gift. Red is considered very lucky. Legendarily, over 5000 years ago, the Chinese people were being terrorized by an enormous beast called the Nian, or, "Year" in English. The Nian would appear every New Year's Day, which is the first day of lunar calendar. Nian would devour the people's crops, livestock and even children . . . especially children. No one could stop Nian, but one New Year's Day, the people saw two things. Nian would not eat children wearing red, and some firecrackers frightened Nian. Nian fled before destroying everything and the people decided to prepare for the next year. The people put red lanterns on their doors and windows to keep Nian out and lit firecrackers all day long. Nian never returned, but the people have been doing these things ever since on New Year's Day, just in case. Centuries ago, when Susho began to evolve from home furnishing and clothing, the Emperor and his court wanted wall art to decorate their palaces. The aristocrats favored natural scenes, wanting to capture the detail and texture of flora and fauna. Susho artists learned to please the taste of the elites, by making natural scenes as realistic as possible. Symbolically, the images were meant to permanently capture the essences and benefits of the subjects. Even an Emperor cannot keep his flowers alive forever, but capturing souls in silk will make them eternal captives.

Oil paper umbrellas are a symbol for prosperity due to the shape of the open parasol. The Chinese character for an umbrella means many people under a shelter, which represents many children or unity under one roof. Thus, giving an umbrella to a married daughter as a dowry symbolising all the blessings her parent wishes for her. Paper umbrellas are coated with persimmon oil that is water-proof and can be used on a mild rainy day. Rinse it when dirty and dry it under the sun is ok. As for the cloth material umbrellas, brush dust away gently is the best way to clean it. These umbrellas are a great idea for wedding photo shooting, indoor decorations, gift giving and so on. Because they are hand-made and hand-painted, each of them is really an unique work of art.
