Abount This Painting and the Painter
Qichang Dong (1555-1636),was a calligrapher and painter in Ming Dynasty.
His ancestry came from Laiyang of Shandong,and his grandfather was awarded a military office in Suzhou.
He passed the highest imperial examination in the 17th year of Wanli Era and became an imperial compiler,and eventually rose up to the Minister of Rites.
He followed the style of Dong Yuan,Ju Ran,Huang Gongwang and Ni Zang and was noted for landscapes,which were subject to special spatial arrangement,blue-and-green technique and elegant brushwork.
Based on Chan Buddhism, he considered there to be a Northern School and a Southern School,and he was a leading figure of the Huating School.
As a painter and art theorist,he had a significant influence in late Ming and early Qing Dynasty.
In calligraphy,he followed Jin and Tang masters,but formed a style of his own.
His extant works include Living beside Rocks (Yan Ju Tu),Eight Views of Autumn Moods (Qiu Xing Ba Jing Tu) and Hometown of Notables (Zhou Jin Tang Tu).
He wrote such books as Essays on Meditation Hall (Hua Chan Shi Sui Bi),Collected Works of Rongtai (Rong Tai Wen Ji),etc,and engraved Xi Hong Tang Tie.
And this painting is the fifth of Eight Views of Autumn Moods album,colorful,simple and beautiful.
