Van Gogh's inspiration was the birth of his namesake nephew, deciding to paint a gift for the new parents to hang over their bed. The uncharacteristic composition of this painting was meant to convey the joy of looking up at a clear blue sky through the beauty of flowering branches. Van Gogh loved flowering trees, they represented awakening and hope.
