THE GREAT WALL © 2001 Patricia Gould 29 x 38 inches. I chose to depict The Great Wall of China in fiber since it made a huge impression on me when I walked upon it. The way the masonry and clay walls meander across the spines of these very sharp hills is intriguing. Only small sections have been restored, while the majority of it is being slowly reclaimed by the earth. This restored section is a beautiful example of the prominence of the structure, as the walls and towers march across thousands of miles of harsh landscape. Ironically, this incredible structure was built over the centuries to keep China safe from foreign invasions, yet today is one of the main tourist attractions, drawing visitors from the entire world. Ready to hang, sewn on sleeve and slat/rod are included.

REMAINS OF THE DAY ©2003 Patricia Gould 24 x 34 inches. My visit to Deception Island, once an important whaling station, left me with haunting images of a bygone era. These and other piles of whale bones were scattered around the lava beach. The remains of the casks, which held the whale oil and the boilers, are slowly being reclaimed by the elements. Once I enlarged the image to its present size, and then created the scene in fabric, it looked more like a mountain landscape than a small patch of beach with the remains of the whale. I knew when I shot the photo that I was drawn to the abstract design of the bones, but I didn't know what final image would emerge in the finished work. Ready to hang with sleeve and wooden slat.

Inspired by a photo I took of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, a volcanic formation. I imagined what it might have looked like as it was erupting over 200 million years ago.
