The maqamaat are an interesting literary genre in classical Arabic literature. They were stories written using rhyming prose and the Maqamaat of Hariri written in the 11th century by Hariri of al-Basra feature a collection of stories revolving around the character of Abu Zayd who wanders from town to town speaking to groups of powerful people while tricking them and pranking them along the way. All the stories are filled with humor and comedy. These stories were vividly narrated and in the scene above, Abu Zayd acts as an arbitrator when he offers a speech on legal discourse when a group of camels is presented to him. This story was illustrated in a 13th century copy of this manuscript. We have aimed to transfer that medieval illustration, which is very colorful, to this woodburned rendition done by us in our workshop and put on this beautiful waxed tray. The tray is for decorative purposes but since there is no paint involved and we have finished the piece in a food safe wax - it can be used as a cheese plate of food tray for your entertaining purposes. It is truly a one of a kind piece of history perfect for any space in your home or office. Material: Basswood; Technique: Pyrography; Finish: Wax; Dimensions: 7 x 11 x 0.7 inches;
