This beautiful wax painting or Batik comes to you all the way from Africa. It is quite large in size and features a man and woman dancing. The figures are absract in their bodies; however, their faces are not. The most widespread of handmade cloths in Africa. 'Batik' - a method of dyeing fabrics by applying wax to the areas which are to be left uncoloured. The process by which the Batik is created involves the worker spreading a piece of cloth out, dipping a sponge into molten paraffin wax and applying the wax to the areas that will remain uncoloured. The waxed cloth is then dyed to achieve the beautiful designs shown here. The 'feathered' or 'veined' appearance is achieved by scrunching the waxed cloth, causing hair-line cracks in the wax, which allows the dye through to the cloth. The finished Batik can then be used as a unique and authentic decoration in any home.
