Ao lived in the South China Sea when the world was being formed. One day, the water god, Gong Gong, destroyed the sky by misbehaving. The creator of mankind, the goddess Nuwa, needed to act quickly and cruelly, to repair the sky, or mankind would not survive. One of her animal victims was Ao. Ao used to have legs like humans do, but Nuwa took them to help prop up the sky. She left Ao's feet, so he could swim. Ao moved to the friendlier Bohai Sea, where he now carries the three islands of the Eight Immortals on his back.
