When decorating a room, wall art and accessories should be considered the finishing touches. This means that you should have the rest of your décor finished so your wall art and accessories are the last to be placed in your room. Wall art can serve a very important purpose. Once you have selected the colors you want in your room, choose a piece of wall art that incorporates all of them to tie all aspects of your room together for a cohesive look. With these few suggestions and tips you may feel more comfortable when it comes to selecting wall art and accessories.

What is Wall Art?

If you are like some people, you consider wall art to be elegant or ornate picture frames hung in a formal setting. Wall art incorporates so much more than that. Granted, picture frames do comprise a lot of the wall art in a home, but wall art also includes items like wall sconces, sculptures, fiber or textile art, framed mirrors, or framed collectible plates. Wall art can even be a decorative shelf to display candleholders or whimsical picture frames or music boxes.

Can I Afford Wall Art?

If you are on a budget and don't have a lot of wall art already, you can still incorporate artwork into your décor. Instead of several paintings, choose a large piece that will fill the wall space. Whether your decor calls for a beautiful ornate silver picture frame or a contemporary black wood picture frame, there are many options available to you, so let your style and décor determine the type of frame that surrounds your painting.

If you have small inexpensive pieces of art that you want to display in your home, consider hanging them on a wall painted with a dark, rich color. Your artwork will be greatly enhanced and the eye appeal will add a beautiful touch to your decor.

What About Shared Wall Space?

Most often in home decorating wall art and wall accessories will share the same wall. You could have a tapestry or other textile art hanging with your photographs or framed mirrors hanging with sconces. When arranging these pieces on your wall, remember to begin by placing items in the middle of the wall and then fill in around this main art grouping.

What About Art Collections?

A wall grouping of your art collection is a great way to share it with family and friends. You may get as much satisfaction seeing it on display as you did finding each treasured piece. Do you have a collection of old advertisements or floral prints? What about family photographs? If you are into genealogy and have old family photos from past generations you can create a family photo gallery. If you are not sure how to make the most of hanging your collection, here are some tips to take the guess work out of it.

Picture Frames: A grouping of artwork should be composed of similar picture frames. They don't need to be exactly the same, but should be the same color for a cohesive look. So, whether you choose all black or all silver picture frames, the most important aspect to keep in mind is the style and decor of your room.

Plan Your Arrangement: If you have a large grouping of picture frames to hang (more than six or seven) save yourself time and trouble by creating your arrangement on the floor below your wall before you start hammering in nails. Once you have created a suitable arrangement on the floor, start hanging them on the wall starting from the center and working out.

Create An Eye Pleasing Arrangement: If you are hanging a grouping of photographs, don't mix color prints with black and white prints. Sepia tone photos blend well with an arrangement of black and white photos.

You really don't need a lot of accessories to add beauty to your home. If you have limited space or a limited budget, consider a framed mirror. A big, dramatic mirror that complements your style and décor is a great way to add accessories and wall art to your room.

Adding art and accessories to your room décor is a great way to personalize your room. You can make it as fun or as formal as you like, depending upon the art and accessories themselves. Another great thing about wall art and accessories is that they are easy to change should you decide you want a different feel or style for your room.
