Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. In Chinese symbology, irises are the dancing spirits of the early part of summer, and the petals are symbolic of butterfly wings, free and flying in the wind. Irises are called "Purple Butterflies" Irises are characterized as inspiring faith, hope, wisdom and valor. Centuries ago, when Susho began to evolve from home furnishing and clothing, the Emperor and his court wanted wall art to decorate their palaces. The aristocrats favored natural scenes, wanting to capture the detail and texture of flora and fauna. Susho artists learned to please the taste of the elites, by making natural scenes as realistic as possible. Symbolically, the images were meant to permanently capture the essences and benefits of the subjects. Even an Emperor cannot keep an iris alive forever, but capturing its soul in silk will make it a captive, eternally.

Susho is a 2500 year old family tradition, with a unique and fascinating history. There is a famous Chinese legend about true love and butterflies. A beautiful and intelligent girl named Zhu came from a wealthy family. Girls were not allowed to go to school, but Zhu talked her father into letting her attend classes disguised as a boy. As a boy, Zhu became best friends with Liang. Liang did not know Zhu was a girl and couldn't guess Zhu was in love with him. One day Zhu's father told her no more school, no more pretending to be a boy, he found a wealthy husband for her and she had to get married. Liang discovered Zhu was a girl, and realized he loved her too. But, Zhu's father would not let her marry a poor student. Liang died of a broken heart. When Zhu's wedding procession passed Liang's grave, a clap of thunder opened up the grave. Zhu threw herself into the grave to be with Liang. Zhu and Liang turned into beautiful butterflies and flew off, together forever. So, symbolically in Chinese culture, butterflies represent the purity of love, especially young love. In our home in southeast China, it is a tradition for girls to celebrate the spring goddess in late spring. When the time is right, girls pick special flowers, play with butterflies and make willow crowns for the celebration. Butterflies are signs that the best of the season has arrived. Butterflies with flowers symbolize sweet, innocent love and an early, but perfect marriage. Butterflies also represent freedom, specifically, the freedom to choose. To fly free from human longings and desires and soar joyfully into the heavens.

In Asian art, Cherry Blossoms and Red Winter Plum Blossoms are somewhat synonymous. Both are harbingers of spring and are considered welcoming.
Cherry trees bloom in early spring, when it is still cold. Tiny flowers appear without leaves, which arrive later in the year. This unique showing is seen as brave and inspiring hope, symbolic of the strength that comes from surviving a harsh winter, and the good fortune that comes with strength of character.
In Chinese culture, the color red is very important. Red attracts good fortune and frightens away bad fortune. According to legend, the Chinese people were being terrorized by an enormous beast called the Nian, translating to Year in English.
The Nian would appear every New Year's Day, the first day of lunar calendar. Nian would devour the people's crops, livestock and even children.
One New Year's Day, the people saw two things. Nian would not eat children wearing red, and some firecrackers frightened Nian. Nian fled before destroying everything and the people decided to prepare.
The next year, people put red lanterns on their doors and windows to keep Nian out and lit firecrackers all day long. Nian never returned, but the people have been doing these things ever since on New Year's Day, just in case.
Today, in China, red cherry blossoms are the one of the most popular flowers for home decor. Often, cherry or plum blossom images are displayed in the entrance way or living room for a big welcome to guests.

This particular design was one of the first we created based on an American's request and is a testament to the talent of our Susho artists. When we arrived in the United States, we asked our new American staff for design recommendations to please Western tastes.
One suggestion, based on our mastery of wildlife designs, was the "Lion of Judah" from the bible's New Testament, Book of Revelation. The Lion of Judah is the symbol for the Tribe of Judah, the tribe included King David, Solomon and Jesus Christ. The Lion of Judah often symbolizes Jesus in Christian artwork. C.S. Lewis chose to represent his Christ figure as a lion named Aslan.
Our Susho artists in China were fascinated by the stories, and asked for one image that would best tell the story of the lion's character. It was decided that the lion should be praying, having a heartfelt talk with his heavenly father.
Our new staff was stunned by the final artwork. Not only did the artists capture the physical character of the lion perfectly, but the expression is profound. The lion looks focused and reverent, he's praying. The execution of the design for the lion's fur is amazing, every hair is distinct and glows in pure silk.
In Chinese symbolism, lions represent unrelenting power and strength. And, the lion is the King of the Beasts, a symbol of grandeur. All throughout China, you will find statues of lions as guardians in front of temples, city gates and even some private homes. These lion statues protect honor and reputations. In Feng Shui, lions are a charm for a successful career with great prestige.

Lotus flowers, or Chinese water lilies, grow in muddy ponds, close every night and open again at dawn, pristine and pure. In Feng Shui, lotus flowers are a powerful symbol of purity, one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism. Specifically, the lotus symbolizes the Buddha Guanyin. Although there are many conflicting stories about the origin of Guanyin, Guanyin is the symbol of purity, gentleness, compassion and mercy. One of the legends about the immortal Guanyin is she chose to manifest as woman with a thousand eyes and a thousand arms, so she could observe the suffering of the world and use her arms to help and comfort. Many Christians have a similar view of the Virgin Mary. Guanyin was born of a lotus, emerging from the mud clean and unspoiled, a completely natural beauty, pure and innocent.
