Both are harbingers of spring and are considered welcoming. Cherry trees bloom in early spring, when it is still cold. Tiny flowers appear without leaves, which arrive later in the year. This unique showing is seen as brave and inspiring hope, symbolic of the strength that comes from surviving a harsh winter, and the good fortune that comes with strength of character. In Chinese culture, the color red is very important. Red attracts good fortune and frightens away bad fortune. According to legend, the Chinese people were being terrorized by an enormous beast called the Nian, translating to Year in English. The Nian would appear every New Year's Day, the first day of lunar calendar. Nian would devour the people's crops, livestock and even children. One New Year's Day, the people saw two things. Nian would not eat children wearing red, and some firecrackers frightened Nian. Nian fled before destroying everything and the people decided to prepare. The next year, people put red lanterns on their doors and windows to keep Nian out and lit firecrackers all day long. Nian never returned, but the people have been doing these things ever since on New Year's Day, just in case. Today, in China, red cherry blossoms are the one of the most popular flowers for home decor. Often, cherry or plum blossom images are displayed in the entrance way or living room for a big welcome to guests.

One of the legends about the immortal Guanyin is she chose to manifest as woman with a thousand eyes and a thousand arms, so she could observe the suffering of the world and use her arms to help and comfort. Many Christians have a similar view of the Virgin Mary. Guanyin was born of a lotus, emerging from the mud clean and unspoiled, a completely natural beauty, pure and innocent. The lotus symbolizes purity, generosity and high status, royalty. The lotus is the mother of Guanyin and has similar qualities and so, often represents her. In Feng Shui, the color green is associated with good health, harmony and prosperity. This specific design with the coin-like green lotus leaves in a large pile, symbolizes a "Money Mountain".
